Introduction: What is MOON saga/project?

The MOON project is a huge part of Gackt's works up to this point. It is made up of many pieces scattered here and there, from albums to concerts to books. Gackt sees it as a puzzle of sorts, and we are the ones who must assemble those pieces to understand the whole picture. This section attempts to organize the pieces of the puzzle in terms of timeline, characters and works that fit into the overall MOON project.

But what is MOON project? What is its purpose?

Explaining what MOON project is easier than explaining its purpose. When something is referred to as being "a part of MOON", it means that the work, whether it be an album, song, book or movie, contributes to telling the story of MOON. The story of MOON can be grasped by looking at the Timeline of MOON and the Residents of MOON sections. The MOON project, seen simply as a way to tell a story through different mediums, is easy enough to understand. But what is harder to explain is what underlies the huge story of MOON, what we are supposed to get out of it. The main theme running through all the works related to MOON is "existence". Gackt uses the moon as a symbol of existence. He uses vampires to express what it is to be "human". Gackt did not create MOON just to tell a story, but as a way for us to think about our own existence. And because of that, the meaning or purpose behind MOON will differ for each individual. We will all interpret things differently, and take away different lessons from MOON-- in that way, it is impossible to state definitively, "this is what Gackt meant when he wrote so-and-so." So as you read through the Works of MOON section, please keep in mind that all interpretations belong to this writer, and I am hopeful that all of you can come up with your own ideas of what the MOON story means.

There are three subsections for the discussion of MOON. “Timeline of MOON” details where each piece of the MOON project falls chronologically. “Residents of MOON” is a discussion of the various characters that populate the world of MOON. “Works of MOON” is a detailed discussion of how the various concerts, albums, and other works fit into the MOON project as a whole.
